About This Program
Our Chinese Learning Program is specifically designed for K-6 students who are eager to develop proficiency in the Chinese language, whether they are beginners or already have some background. This program provides an immersive experience that not only focuses on language acquisition but also fosters a deep understanding of Chinese culture. Students will develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through dynamic lessons that incorporate interactive teaching methods, practical exercises, and cultural storytelling. The program runs 5 days a week, with each session lasting approximately 90 to 120 minutes, starting right after school, ensuring a structured and consistent learning environment.
Teaching Materials and Course Design: The program utilizes the renowned MaLiPing textbook series, which has been widely adopted by Chinese language schools for heritage learners worldwide. This comprehensive curriculum is designed to support students’ growth across all key areas of language learning:
- Speaking & Listening: The curriculum emphasizes spoken Chinese, helping students become comfortable with everyday conversation. Students engage in dialogues, skits, and pronunciation drills to ensure they are confident in oral communication.
- Reading: The textbooks introduce a carefully structured progression of Chinese characters and reading comprehension exercises. Younger students start with basic characters, while older students work their way up to more complex stories, poems, and passages that reflect both modern and classical Chinese literature.
- Writing: Writing is reinforced through character practice workbooks that focus on stroke order, handwriting, and memorization of commonly used characters. As students advance, they are introduced to sentence structures and short essays, gradually improving their written expression.
The MaLiPing curriculum ensures that students are not only learning to communicate but also gaining a deeper appreciation for Chinese literature and culture. It is well-suited for students across different grade levels, with tailored content for each group.
Grade-Specific Focus:
-
Grades K-2: Students in the lower grades will start with the basics of Chinese characters and simple words. Through engaging stories and songs, they will learn to recognize common characters, improve pronunciation, and understand simple conversational phrases. The focus is on character recognition and spoken communication at this stage, with fun, interactive activities like storytelling, poems, and picture-based learning to keep them engaged.
-
Grades 3-4: Students in the middle grades will build upon their foundation by learning to read and write short sentences. The curriculum introduces more complex vocabulary, sentence structures, and reading comprehension exercises. They’ll engage in small reading projects and begin to write short paragraphs, while also working on improving their spoken fluency. Interactive discussions, role-play, and conversation practice are emphasized to enhance their listening and speaking abilities.
-
Grades 5+: The upper grades focus on more advanced reading and writing skills. Students will be introduced to longer reading passages, including traditional Chinese stories and poetry. Writing assignments become more structured, requiring students to express themselves through essays and short compositions. The spoken component also shifts towards more sophisticated conversations, debates, and presentations, preparing students to use the language in more complex scenarios.
Instructors: Our instructors are among the most qualified educators in the Bay Area, each with an average of 5 years of teaching experience in Chinese language instruction. They are all bilingual in Chinese and English, ensuring that they can effectively communicate and support students at all levels of proficiency. Every instructor undergoes a thorough background check to ensure the safety and well-being of our students.
Course Structure: The course is carefully designed to provide a balanced approach to learning, incorporating a variety of activities to keep students engaged and progressing. The program is divided into structured time slots, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience:
- Interactive Teaching: Instructors lead dynamic lessons focusing on conversation, character recognition, and vocabulary development. These sessions encourage active participation and practice in a fun and supportive environment.
- Story & Poem Reading: Students will read traditional Chinese stories and poems, which serve as both a cultural education and a method to improve reading comprehension and vocabulary. This helps students connect with the rich literary heritage of China while developing reading skills.
- Small Practices, Homework, and Quizzes: Daily lessons are reinforced through practice exercises, short quizzes, and assigned homework. These tasks help students retain new characters and grammar, while also allowing instructors to assess their progress.
- Homework Tutoring: A dedicated portion of the session is set aside for students to receive tutoring assistance with both their school homework and Chinese homework. This ensures that students stay on top of their assignments and get the help they need to succeed.
